Learning to Be a Rodeo Clown

While most clowns are there for entertaining kids of all ages at a circus or birthday party, rodeo clowns serve a much different purpose. Sometimes referred to as bullfighters or even protection athletes they are there to distract a bull so the bull rider can escape or be rescued.

Becoming a rodeo clown requires quite a bit of knowledge. First, someone who is interested in this profession needs to be familiar with the types of animals used in a rodeo. Anyone interested can get their feet wet by attending live rodeos and paying attention to what is involved. It is not wise to enter a ring with a bull if you have no idea what to expect and no training. Rodeo clowns learn how to perform their job usually one of two ways: they either go to clown school or learn from an experienced, professional clown. There are schools that provide training in areas such as how to distract a bull, how to tumble and flip to entertain the crowd, and how to dress up like a clown using clothing and makeup. Training from an experienced rodeo clown will most likely happen if you know a clown personally and closely. If the experienced rodeo person does not think you will make the cut then clown school is your only option.

Deciding to become a rodeo clown is not a decision to be taken lightly. There is a real chance that you could get injured or killed in the arena. Typically, these athletes work in teams in order to minimize the risk and provide extra help for other clowns or rodeo professionals that have been injured in the arena.
